This paper introduces a woman's adoption behaviour through a case analysis of Vietnam’s gia pha (genealogy). Most of the research on the pre-modern Vietnamese adoption system was conducted in terms of Legal history, and every adoption case was also cited in Đại Việt sử ký toàn thư. Among them, the case of the adoption of Empress or Princess drew attention and the 17th-century legal text only had a clause prohibiting women from adopting for infidelity, so it has been speculated that women's adoption would have been widespread. In this paper, I confirmed that women of various classes were able to adopt in the pre-modern period.
